Addressing Critical Needs for
Public and Workplace Safety in Houghton County
The Houghton County Board of Commissioners intend to
place a proposal on the upcoming August election ballot
to fund the construction of a new county jail facility.
The urgent need to replace the current facility is based
on factors including but not limited to, aging
infrastructure, lack of space, including inmate
population, and more importantly the safety of the
staff, public and inmates.
A jail committee was
formed which included local community leaders, elected
officials, Sheriff’s Office staff, Courthouse staff, and
civilian organizations which include neighbors of the
Sharon Ave. property and the League of Women Voters.
